For me, ages is decades, while years ago might be one decade or longer. Often, they mean about the same thing for me. I can't give you a ballpark figure or range, but I will say that in ages is often used as a humorous exageration since in other circumstances it is employed to discuss things beyond one human's personal memory, as in "the Ice Age" "the Stone Age" so I'd say at leas t a century.
Years ago is not ancient history and is actually recallable but maybe vaguely by the person. Maybe after six, seven years? Still, even though I haven't posted on WordReference in about a month, I can easily say "I haven't posted here in ages" with ages verbally punched as "in AGES" with all the possible centuries that implies.

Alternately, you could use "years ago," "forever ago," or any similar expression.
