Should i upgrade iphone 3g to 4.2

I can't seem to find any messaging apps that will download to the 4. I have found a few that is compatible with 4. I updated my iTunes version to the newest for Windows and I can't find my device when I plug in the old phone. My account comes up, but my device isn't listed anywhere in any menu. Any suggestions?
