Enjoy your favorite hot beverage wherever you are with this mug from Tervis , which is both microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Made from Tritan — a lightweight, durable, BPA-free plastic — it has a double-walled, insulated design that can help keep your beverage hot or cold for longer. This is such a handy cup that I can use for my coffee or tea and if my drink gets cold I can just put it in the microwave.
So handy. And, and the same goes for the handle of that Pyrex measuring cup, which I consider the champ of the microwave. However, if you touch the sides of this microwave-safe coffee mug, instead of the handle, it will be hot. Perhaps very hot. You know better than to grasp it by the sides because the hot water has heated the sides.
Well, this same thing goes for any microwave safe dish. It can still get hot from the food inside. The better the material is at absorbing and retaining heat in general, the quicker it will heat up. Any large ceramic dish filled with food, even if it has handles and is microwave safe, will need to be handled carefully with potholders, as by the time the food is cooked, the dish, and probably the handles as well will be hot through heat conduction.

Microwaves are a kind of electromagnetic radiation — just like sunlight, radio waves, and x-rays like the ones they use to take photos of bones in hospitals. When you put your food in a microwave oven, the microwaves make the water molecules in the food vibrate or jiggle around really fast.
This is how the food heats up. Read more: Curious Kids: If a huge huntsman spider is sucked into a vacuum cleaner, can it crawl out later? Putting metal in the microwave oven is generally a bad idea. In metals, the electrons — the tiny, negatively charged parts of the atoms — are free to move around. This is why metals conduct electricity, meaning they can carry electricity from one point to another.
The microwaves push and pull the electrons around. With metallic objects that have sharp edges or tips — like aluminium foil or forks — the electrons can build up on the tips. Most of the time, ceramics are made through clay. The clay is molded and formed, just as in any pottery process. Ceramics include all kinds of things like brick, earthenware, and porcelain or china. Most dishware is traditionally ceramic. First, the clay is formed, and then to set it, it is fired at intense heat.
The heating process hardens the material to make it durable and long-lasting. What you will find is that in general, your ceramic dishes are microwave-safe. Most of them might even be stamped that way or have another symbol on them that means the same thing. We do recommend that you check your items and your packaging for these labels to know if they can be used in the microwave. The indicator may be these precise words printed or stamped on the bottom of the dish or a symbol that looks like a microwave.
But, here is what you really should know about that label that says microwave-safe. This label simply means that you can microwave your item without damaging or breaking it. The kicker is that while they may be microwave-safe the dish may be too hot to handle after you have microwaved it. Always handle your items with caution, particularly ceramic dishes as they do get very hot to the touch when they are microwaved.
One more thing we want to mention. We always assume that if something has that microwave-safe label that it means the item is non-toxic. We just want to point out again that these markings are really not regulated. However, there is often no way to know whether it could be emitting toxic chemicals into the microwave or your food or the air.
This is not likely with ceramic dishes but it is always a possibility so keep that in mind.
